Shelbyville's public library is a
French Renaissance-style structure, dedicated in 1905 and built with a Carnegie grant.
It is handicapped accessible and has computers and a video library for public use. In keeping with the library's plan to keep the building in good structural and operating condition, but trying to keep it original look, in1995 it had a face-lift. The library was updated by the removing fluorescent fixtures and adding period and recessed lighting. Table lamps were placed back on the library tables that originally held them. The thirty year old air conditioning units were removed replaced with concealed units. In 2000, with a grant from the State Library an addition was added, carpet was replaced, and the structure was painted. New woodwork was made to match the original woodwork. The grant also created a meeting room in the library. Visitors are encouraged to come in and enjoy a quiet interlude while viewing fluted pilasters, oak arches,fireplaces and much of the original furnishings. |
